Residency Programs

Surgical residency training has changed significantly over the years, and yet continues to produce highly-trained and competent general surgeons. However, the skill set of graduating residents is no longer guaranteed to provide for a community most benefited by general surgeons with some experience and confidence in subspecialty surgery. In response to this, there are training programs who have developed dedicated rural surgery tracts or placed specific emphasis on giving trainees exposure to rural surgery. The American College of Surgeons has comprised a list of these programs, which can be found here.

Residency Membership with NARSS

Holding residency membership with the North American Rural Surgical Society (NARSS) is a great way to engage trainees in rural surgery. If you are a program director, partnering with the NARSS grants meeting registration for two residents at a discounted price. Resident attendance at the annual meetings is encouraged, and they are welcome to submit abstracts for presentation slots and publication. Listed below are residency programs who hold active membership with the NARSS.

  • University of South Dakota | Sioux Falls, SD

  • University of Minnesota | Duluth, MN

  • University of North Dakota | Grand Forks, ND

  • University of Illinois | Peoria, IL
